2004/05 Mississippi Duck Stamp & PrintGovernor's Signature EditionThe Governer's Signature Edition is a special collector's series, prized by duck enthusiasts and historians alike. This collector's series is sought aster because of the unique period in time it represents. The first year of a new governor's term is the only time this special collector's series is available. Mississippi's history has duck hinting at its heart and sportsmen at the helm. The tradition dates back to 1988. Wood DucksThe wood duck was nearly hunted to extinction in the late 1800's and early 1900'x for its feathers and meat. Once the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 protected the species with legal harvest limits the wood duck made a remarkable comeback. The use of man-made boxes and the expansion of wetlands also contributed to the recovery of the wood duck in North America. Considered by many to be the most beautiful of all waterfowl, the wood duck is highly prized by hunters and makes up more than ten percent of the annual waterfowl harvest in the United States. It is second only to the mallard in the number of birds harvested in the Mississippi flyway.
